    2 articles on implant dentistry published in IJP

    Dr. Birgit Kroeplin and Professor Joerg Strub from the University of Freiburg have recently published two articles in The International Journal of Prosthodontics on implant dentistry curriculum in undergraduate education.

    Dr Kroeplin and Professor Strub’s research has been supported through the university cooperation between Nobel Biocare and the University of Freiburg.

    The first of two articles is a literature study which looks at to what extent implant dentistry has been integrated in dental schools worldwide. The second article describes the undergraduate implant dentistry program at the University of Freiburg and includes three case reports.

    Both articles can be found on PubMed.

    University Partners share Nobel Biocare booth at IADR

    For the IADR in San Diego in March Nobel Biocare invited our Global University Partners to share our booth. The universities were offered an opportunity to market themselves and the University Program towards faculty and doctoral students at the IADR as well as build networks and have small meetings within the facilities of the Nobel Biocare booth.

    6 Partners participating
    The Partner Universities attending were University of Bristih Columbia and University of Toronto from Canada, King Saud University from Saudi Arabia, Hebrew University - Hadassah, from Israel in addition to Tufts University and Louisiana State University from the US.

    Showcasing the University Program
    The booth, with its distinct Nobel Biocare design, also displayed all 27 University Partners logos in addition to a LCD screen presenting each participating university's compilation of how the University Program have benefited their undergraduate education.

    A concept for the future
    With more than 3000 presentations and 2500 posters in addition to symposia, workshops as well as the exhibits the IADR attracts around 6000 participants from all around the world each year. Our Partner Universities were very excited about the opportunity to share the Nobel Biocare booth and the evaluation was very positive. Many ideas were also discussed how to develop the concept further.

  • Karolinska Institutet

    Karolinska Institutet joins the Nobel Biocare Global University Partner Program

    Stockholm, Sweden

    January 2011

    Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden is the latest addition to the University Program. It is one of Europe´s leading medical universities, whose assignment is to contribute to improving people's health through research and education. "We are very proud to enter into this collaboration with Karolinska Institutet and looking forward to a long and fruitful cooperation", says Ingo Braun, Global Head of Clinical Research & University Partner Program.

    Nobel Biocare will be supporting the university's undergraduate and postgraduate dental education. The Department of Dental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and offers education in dentistry, dental hygiene and dental technology. In addition the department operates a student clinic open to the public where students practice supervised by experienced instructors. The department has approximately 250 employees, 500 first-level students and 40 PhD students.

    From Nobel Biocare key personnel from the Swedish subsidiary, the EMEA regional organization, as from the Global University Program Organization are involved in the cooperation. Karolinska Institutet is the 27th university in the Nobel Biocare Partner Program.

  • King Saud University signs amendment

    King Saud University signs amendment

    In October 2010 King Saud University signed an amendment to the current Partner University Contract allowing Nobel Biocare and King Saud to extend the cooperation for two more years. Dean of the Dental School at King Saud University, Prof. Khalid Al-Wazzan signed the contract alongside Dr. Ralf Rauch, Director Professional Relations EMEA, Nobel Biocare.

    The event was also reported in Saudi Arabias most popular newspaper, Alriyadh.

  • Simulation lab opening

    On October 21, the Centre for Dexterity Training and Self-education at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium were inaugurated. In addition a commemorate plate dedicated to Nobel Biocare in the framework of the University Partner Program with KU Leuven was uncovered by rector Prof. Dr. M. Waer and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. B. Himpens.

  • Event for Chinese University Partners

    In conjunction with the European Association of Osseointegration Meeting in Glasgow in October, Nobel Biocare arranged a one day event for approximately 18 faculty members from the Chinese University Partners, including the newest addition to the partner group, the University of Sichuan. The group went on an excursion by bus through Scotland from Glasgow to Edinburgh. The program included visit at the historic Roslyn Chapel as well as a guided walk in the magnificent old town of Edinburgh. During lunch there were speeches and testimonials from several of the participants, including Ingo Braun, Global Head of Clinical Research & University Partner Program at Nobel Biocare and Head of Lin Ye, Director of the Implant Department at the University of Peking.

    The group returned to Glasgow for the contract signing ceremony with Sichuan University, West China College of Stomatology and succeeding dinner with among other Nobel Biocare CEO Mr. Domenico Scala.

    The feedback regarding the whole day event were very positive, as 85 percent of the Chinese Faculty Participants rated all activities, including the overall impression of the event as excellent.

  • Sichuan University new partner

    West China College of Stomatology, University of Sichuan, is the newest member of the Nobel Biocare Global University Partner Program. This university is the 26th university joining the program and the sixth partner university in China. At the contract signing ceremony Professor Ping Gong, Vice Dean of West China College of Stomatology addressed her appreciation to Mr. Scala and all the staff of Nobel Biocare. "I cherish this chance to take part in this significant Nobel Biocare Global University Partner Program. Because of the program students from our university are able to access into implant knowledge from early on in their studies."

    The West China College of Stomatology has earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious educational institutions in dental sciences in China, and the dental clinic at the college has long been ranked as one of the nation’s top treatment centers. The college has the largest number of students of all dental schools in China and graduates 2000 dentists annually.

    "We are extremely happy to have Sichuan join our University Partner Program", says Ingo Braun, Global Head of Clinical Research & University Partner Program. "With Sichuan University we have now partnered with all the top six dental schools in China, and have thereby an unique position with regards to Chinese dental education."

    The signing ceremony, which took place in conjunction with EAO in Glasgow, where CEO Mr. Domenico Scala and Dr. Hans Schmotzer, Executive Vice President, Research & Development signed the University Partner Contract together with Vice Dean Ping Gong, China College of Stomatology.

    "We are highly confident that our students will apply well and spread widely the dental implant knowledge in their further career", said Professor Ping Gong from West China College of Stomatology, University of Sichuan.

    Faculty Training at Charité

    More than 25 dentists joined the training that was performed by the senior colleagues from three departments at Charité July 9-10, 2010. The program covered topics as indications/contra-indications of dental implants, step-by-step learnings for the pre-clinical and clinical courses, augmentation techniques, and case reports.

    Two master technicians from the lab Rübeling & Klar, Mr Ellmann and Mr Schumann, gave a lecture about the teamwork between dentist and dental technician and showed a lot of interesting clinical cases from start to the end of the treatment. This was followed by a lecture and demonstration/hands-on about the Procera Forte Scanner and its software. At the end of the second day all participants joined a hands-on training with NobelReplace Tapered.

    The Nobel Biocare University Partner Program with Charité Berlin is in its third year. Over these years new dentists has joined the faculty teams of all departments involved in the program. In order to update all faculty members and to have a common approach towards the students the training event was initiated by Professor Kielbassa, department for operative dentistry and periodontology and driver of the program, Professor Schmidt-Westhausen, department of oral surgery and radiology, and Professor Freesmeyer, department of prosthodontics.

    The initiative was well received to further strengthen the execution and output of the program for the students in Berlin.

    Dental Technicians Training about NobelProcera at King Saud University

    A group of about 10 dental technicians from King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, received a 2-days training about NobelProcera June 16-17, 2010. Topics of the training were history, products, materials, and production processes of NobelProcera with a special focus on working with the Procera Forte Scanner and its software.

    Every participant was trained in scanning preparations for single tooth crowns and bridges and in designing the corresponding frameworks in the software. In addition to that the design of individualised abutments was trained. Different materials (Zirconia, Alumina, Titanium) were discussed as well as shaded Zirconia, handling of the materials in the lab, veneering, and cementation. The ordering process through the software was trained as well.

    Embedded in the training was a lecture for faculty members of all departments about clinical solutions with NobelProcera. The Dean of the Dental School, Professor Khalid Al-Wazzan, followed by Dr. Esam Tashkandi, the driver of the University Program in KSU, opened the lecture, that was given by CDT Martin Wadman and Dr. Ralf Rauch from Nobel Biocare.

    As a member of the Nobel Biocare University Partner Program King Saud University is now able to train students CAD/CAM dentistry with NobelProcera clinically and perform the production of these restaurations in its own lab.

    University of Heidelberg new Global University Partner

    Nobel Biocare is proud to announce that from June 2010 the Dental Faculty (Universitätsklinik für Mund-, Zahn- und Kieferkrankheiten) of Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg, Germany, is the newest member of the Nobel Biocare Global University Partner Program. Professor Peter Rammelsberg, Head of the Prosthetic Department and main driver of this program, will enhance the possibilities for students to learn even more about proven treatment concepts in the area of implant dentistry, CAD/CAM prosthetics, and 3D diagnostics. The clinic welcomes about 80 undergraduate students every year for a 5-year training program. The Ruprecht-Karls-University is the oldest in Germany, and was founded in October 1386. Numerous Nobel Prize winners worked at this university and have done their research in Heidelberg.

    Patient recruitment program at KU Leuven

    The dental clinic at the Catholic University of Leuven has started a patient recruitment initiative including an article in the internal newsletter of the Hospital UZ Leuven. The newsletter is distributed to alltogether 6,000 employees. The article informs all employees about the University Program and that patients treated in that program by students will receive a price reduction of about 35-40% compared to a general private dental office. The clinic hopes to recruit a lot of patients about that activity, so that not only the students profit from the Nobel Biocare Partnership, but also the employees at the clinic.

    Faculty Training for Girls School from King Saud University

    In order to improve the dental education in the girls school of King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Nobel Biocare organised a 5 days faculty training April 16-22, 2010. Thirteen doctors participated in that training, which are members from the maxillo-facial surgery (1), periodontal (6), and prothetic department (6).

    The participants from King Saud University were: Maryam AL-HINDI, Assistant Professor, Maxillo-facial Surgery, Hend ALHARBI, Demonstrator, Periodontics, Bann ALHAZMI, Demonstrator, Periodontics, Sumiah AJLAN, Demonstrator, Periodontics, Marwa SHAHEEN, Demonstrator, Periodontics, Amani BASUDAN, Demonstrator, Periodontics, Nuha ALOMAR, Demonstrator, Periodontics, May AL HAMDAN, Demonstrator, Prosthodontics, Eman AL HAMDAN, Lecturer, Prosthodontics, Modi AL-DEEB, Demonstrator, Prosthodontics, Ghada AL-RABEAH, Demonstrator, Prosthodontics, Sahar AL ZAIN, Associate Professor, Prosthodontics, Hana AL-SHEIKH, Assistant Professor, Prosthodontics.

    After arrival in Stockholm the day before, Friday, April 16 was the Procera day. After a lecture about the history, the products, materials, and production processes the group had a tour through all areas of the Procera Production Plant. This very informative day and the insight view into the "heard" of Procera made clear what advantages are in the NobelProcera CAD/CAM technology and especially in this state-of-the-art centralised production.

    Over the weekend the group travelled from Stockholm to Gothenburg. Monday to Thursday the group have had full day trainings with several lectures about implant surgery and implant prosthetics with a special focus on Nobel Biocare products and related hands-on trainings. NobelProcera and NobelGuide were also covered. The group visited for one full day the famous Branemark Clinic of the Gothenburg University. Professor Bertil Friberg and co-workers performed live surgeries, Dr. Bengt Lindén and co-workers demonstrated the prosthetic rehabilitation of different indications. In the afternoon Professor Friberg gave a 3-hours lecture about some scientific results in implant dentistry, covering the topic of implant surfaces as well as long-term results of different treatment concepts.

    After the training all participants received a certificate and will transfer the knowledge to their students immediately.

Professor Brook, his team and the professors and faculty members of related departments such as Prosthetics and Radiology have the longest experience with dental implants in the UK.

    Chinese University Partner CAD/CAM training
